A major fire has broken out in the centre of Newlyn and scrambled crews from across west Cornwall.

Flames tore through a pub on Fore Street in the early hours of Monday, closing the road.

Photos show how the flames engulfed the roof above The Fisherman's Arms inn.

Crews say the blaze started in a bedroom, before spreading downstairs and to an adjacent property.

Firefighters from St Just, Penzance, St Ives, Hayle, Truro and Helston were scrambled just before 1am.

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed a 'number of nearby properties' had to be evacuated.

Locals say the family made it out safely, although it is understood four people were taken to hospital for breathing in smoke.

The road is closed and police have tweeted a warning, urging drivers to avoid the area.

"At 00:48 the Critical Control Centre received numerous 999 calls reporting a fire at a property in Fore Street, Newlyn.

"In total, appliances from Penzance, St Just, Hayle, St Ives, Falmouth, Tolvaddon, Helston, Truro and St Dennis were mobilised along with 6 whole time officers for support. Police and ambulance also attended.

"On arrival, the building was well alight and crews used breathing apparatus and hosereel jets to extinguish the fire.

"The incident has now scaled down. A full fire investigation will take place this morning to establish the cause of the fire".

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service
