The 'desperate need' for adoptive families in Cornwall

There is a warning that there is a "desperate need" for adoptive families in Cornwall.

Local adoption charity Families for Children say they need more people to come forward in the Duchy.

The warning comes as the charity reports an exceptionally low number of potential adopters in Cornwall and launches a vigorous recruitment campaign to urge families to come forward for the growing number of children waiting in Local Authority care.

Who can adopt?

Bosses say there is no such thing as an 'ideal' adoptive family and Families for Children are interested in what you can offer to a child and how you can best fulfil their individual needs.

They welcome enquiries from potential adopters, regardless of marital status, disability, gender, religion, sexual orientation, income or whether you have parenting experience or not.

The charity is looking for families from a wide variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds who can offer a permanent loving home and a secure environment to a child.

What about the children they place?

The children they place are often vulnerable and have experienced extreme trauma in their early lives in the form of both physical and emotional abuse.

The children are of all ages, can be of dual heritage or be a group of brothers and sisters, some of the children may also have severe disabilities.

"We are pleased to be reaching this milestone, especially so soon after I have joined FFC. The agency has gone from strength to strength and continues year on year to successfully place vulnerable children with families in the region. However we are at a loss as to why we have so few enquiries about adoption in Cornwall especially as we have always had such a positive number of adopters coming forward.

"As a specialist adoption agency we understand the trauma and neglect that many of the children waiting to be adopted have suffered and the effects this can have on the child and the whole family, some of which can be unknown for many years. We want to let potential adopters know what makes a good adopter and talk to them about the skills they will need to parent an adopted child.

"Families for Children is completely centred on the adoptive family from the start. Whilst we offer the same assessment as Local Authority Agencies we can offer bespoke support packages for the whole family should they need it after adoption?

"We are also reminding people that whilst Local Authority Agencies are regionalising their services in the South West people still have a choice as to who can take them through the adoption process. Families for Children is the alternative to Local Authority and we need adopters today."

Families for Children are simply asking people to come forward and find out more about adoption and to let them know they have a choice as to who they can adopt through.

A local adopter said: "The agency has always gone the extra mile to do everything possible to support us and guide us through the process.

"I would greatly reommend them to anyone considering adopting or seeking advice on adoption."

Families for Children are urging families in Cornwall not to wait and to pick up the phone today and talk with them about starting the adoption process
