A community fundraiser is being held to help a Newlyn family whose pub was destroyed by fire.

The Fisherman's Arms, which overlooks the harbour in Newlyn, went up in flames at the end of February.

At its height, crews from St Just, Penzance, St Ives, Hayle, Truro and Helston were battling the blaze on Fore Street.

The flames tore through an upstairs bedroom, before spreading downstairs and to an adjacent building.

Police confirmed several nearby properties had to be evacuated and the road was cordoned off.

Luckily nobody was hurt but the building was left badly damaged.

Now a fundraising auction is being held to try and raise money for the family.

"When the family went to bed there was a terrible fire, luckily, they all got out, but it was horrific.

"There's nothing left of the place really, it's a well-loved pub, it's part of the community.

"I just feel for all of them.

"We're trying to raise money for the family to get them back on their feet, get some bits and pieces for the children, they've lost everything.

"A lot of people have contributed already even though they can't really afford it themselves

"When something really tragic happens, people pull together."

Deannah Wright, fundraiser organiser

The community fundraiser for The Fisherman's Arms is taking place at the Alexandra Inn in Penzance at 8pm on Saturday 9th March.

Items have been donated by local businesses and people are being urged to come along.
