Facebook down for hours in 'worst ever' outage

Facebook has gone down for eight hours in what is thought to be the worst outage in its history.

Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger also had problems from around 3pm on Wednesday.

Bosses say it is a "partial outage", affecting users in the east and west coasts of the US and Europe.

Many could not post, send pictures or in some cases log on at all, on either desktop or mobiles.

Posting on its developer site, Facebook said it was investigating and trying to get the problem fixed.

"We are currently experiencing issues that may cause some API requests to take longer or fail unexpectedly.

"We are investigating the issue and working on a resolution".

It also TWEETED to explain a bit about what was going on, confirming that the issue is "not related to a DDoS attack", or cyber attack.

The problems sparked a flurry of comments and amusing memes on Twitter...

Some users even likened what was happening to the apocalypse!

Instagram is back online and the photo-sharing app also used rival Twitter to tell users "we're back".

Parent company Facebook is still experiencing problems and still has not revealed what caused the issues.
