Thomas Cook announces plans to shut stores

Published by Emma Carton at 10:16am 22nd March 2019. (Updated at 4:08pm 22nd March 2019)

Travel agent Thomas Cook is going to shut 21 of its stores across the UK, including one in Cornwall.

Launceston is on the closures list, as the company looks to 'streamline its UK retail network'.

The decision is believed to be due to more people booking their holidays online.

It is understood 320 jobs are at risk nationwide, including 102 customer-facing roles.

"Today's announcement reflects the wider challenges seen on the high street, with more and more customers choosing to book online.

"These measures will help us to drive greater efficiencies across Thomas Cook so that we relentlessly focus our resources in those areas that give us the greatest opportunity to make a difference to customers in our core holiday offering.

"Looking ahead, we will be working to ensure that Thomas Cook is fit for the future, putting a rigorous focus on costs in a competitive environment while giving customers more reasons to holiday with the strongest brand in travel."

A consultation with unions and staff is understood to be underway.
