Man airlifted to hospital following M5 crash

A man has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a crash on the M5.

Police say a flat-bed truck and a van were caught in the collision near Exeter.

The northbound stretch between junctions 30 and 31 was closed to allow the air ambulance to land.

The collision sparked nine-mile tailbacks in the area, however all lanes have now re-opened.

"Emergency services are currently at the scene of a collision on the M5.

"Police were called at around 7.40am to reports of a collision between a flat-bed truck and a van on the M5, just prior to Junction 30, northbound.

"There is currently a closure at Junction 31, northbound.

"Two lanes are closed and this will become a full closure to allow the air ambulance to attend".

Police added: "We expect this matter to cause significant disruption to the road network.

"We urge road users to drive with caution and to seek alternative routes for the foreseeable future".

Inrix Traffic and Travel is reporting nine-mile tailbacks and a journey time of over an hour.

"Severe delays and queueing traffic for nine miles due to earlier accident, multiple vehicles involved on M5 Northbound from J31, A38 (Okehampton turn off) to J30, A376 Sidmouth Road (Exeter/ Service Areas).

"Congestion to A38 Splatford Split and the A379 as traffic diverts around. Travel time is 1 hour 15 minutes.

"All lanes have been re-opened".

All lanes have now re-opened but there are still severe delays in the area.

"Good news, all reopened. Thanks one and all for your patience, hopefully the backlog will clear, shortly."
