Russian cargo ship that grounded off Falmouth to be sold

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 8:38am 27th March 2019. (Updated at 9:14am 27th March 2019)

A Russian cargo ship detained off the Cornish coast since December is being sold at auction.

The Kuzma Minin ran aground in stormy seas off Falmouth, sparking a major rescue.

The vessel had to be towed to safety by tugs and was later seized by authorities, pending a legal row over unpaid debts.

18 crew members from the Kuzma Minin were later released after more than two months on board.

Pirate FM understands the money from the sale to an unknown buyer, will be used to pay off the debts.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency issued this statement in December, when the ship was moved to the harbour.

"The vessel remains under detention by the MCA and directed not to leave Falmouth Bay until acceptable repairs have been made.

"Once the repairs have taken place, a follow-up inspection will be made before the vessel can be released.

"The vessel has full electrical and engine power, and all crew onboard are safe and well.

"The Secretary of State’s Representative Maritime Salvage & Intervention and the Environment Group continue to monitor the situation".
