UPDATE: A30 closed near Launceston in 'police incident'

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 7:16am 8th April 2019. (Updated at 11:02am 8th April 2019)

Part of the A30 in Cornwall was left closed in both directions because of a 'police incident'.

A woman in her 20s has been airlifted to hospital after falling from a bridge over the road.

She has suffered serious leg injuries.

Police and paramedics got the shout amid concerns for her welfare - as she was on the wrong side on the railings.

But she fell as officers were trying to talk her down.

The road and the bridge over the A30 were closed in both directions and there was slow traffic in the area.

It has now re-opened.

"Police and ambulance were called at 6.20am today [8 April] following concern for the welfare of a woman on the A30 overbridge, Tavistock Road, Launceston.

"The woman, in her 20s, was on the wrong side of the railings.

"Officers began to negotiate with the woman but she fell from the bridge.

"The woman sustained serious leg injuries was treated at the scene by paramedics. She was airlifted to Derriford Hospital by air ambulance.

"The A30 was closed in both directions [eastbound at the A388 junction and westbound at Lifton]. The overbridge is also closed.

"Westbound A30 reopened at 8.25am but the eastbound carriageway remains closed."

Devon and Cornwall Police

Drivers are being urged to avoid the area and some cars are thought to be trapped inside the closed area.

"A30 Eastbound closed, slow traffic due to police incident from A388 Tavistock Road (Launceston) to A388 (Polson / Lifton Down Turn Off, Liftondown).

"The westbound side reopened around 08:20 following the incident which has been ongoing since just after 07:00.

"The A388 bride over the A30 remains closed in both directions."
