Truro cathedral honours Notre Dame after devastating fire

Cornwall is honouring the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris after it was engulfed by flames.

The gothic building's spire and roof collapsed but the main structure, including the two bell towers, were saved.

Flames ripped through the 12th century structure on Monday night sending plumes of smoke into the sky.

Now Truro cathedral is paying tribute to all those affected.

"Like everybody I was horrified, but I was tempered a little bit by the extent of the damage perhaps not being as terrible and awful as it was first thought, and the durability of these buildings to withstand some of the most extreme conditions that can be thrown at it, but not withstanding that, a terribly sad event.

"I think it only reinforces the fact that these fantastic buildings do symbolise many things for many different people, and represent so much about identity and belonging, it's not just about the history it's about what they mean for people today.

"And therefore, the significance and symbolism of these buildings is almost incalculable in what they mean for ordinary people.

"We will be remembering our brothers and sisters in Paris; we will be remembering all those worshippers and regular attenders of the Notre Dame in our prayers over the next few weeks and months as they react to what they will need to do restore their wonderful building to its former glory."

Roger Bush, Dean of Truro Cathedral

The French President says he wants Notre Dame cathedral rebuilt to be "even more beautiful" and within the next five years.

It is expected the costs will rise into the hundreds of millions, but enormous amounts have already been raised, with some of France's wealthiest families making huge donations.

French government meetings are being held on Wednesday to focus on the fundraising campaign.
