Cornwall's first geothermal spa is delayed

Published by Emma Carton at 10:22am 26th April 2019. (Updated at 10:23am 26th April 2019)

The opening of Cornwall's first geothermal spa has had to be delayed until November.

Geothermal Energy Limited, who own the geothermal well next to Jubilee Pool in Penzance, have had to stop drilling.

They are worried going deeper could cause the well to collapse, after discovering a high water flow zone below the ground.

GEL will install extra heat pumps to keep the pool warm during the winter months but getting those sorted has taken longer than hoped.

Despite the delay to the geothermal project, the existing Jubilee Pool will re-open on 6th July.

The opening hours will then be increased from 27th July, in time for the school summer holidays.

"We understand this delay to geothermal opening is far from ideal but wanted to do all we could to get the existing pool and other amenities reopen over Summer for the community to enjoy.

"We are doing all we can to work with partners and bring their deadlines further forward where possible".

Chief Operations Officer, Abbie Cranage

Jubilee Pool is planning to close briefly in October 2019 to finalise all the geothermal engineering works and switch on the heat.

They have also applied for planning permission to upgrade a section of the changing rooms and toilets to make them warm, modernised and fit for all weathers in winter.

It is aiming to open the geothermal pool in November 2019, complete with a new winter menu, Christmas parties and a focus on health and wellbeing in the New Year.

"Due to the delay in forecast geothermal income, we are working with Penzance Town Council, Cornwall Council, other major partners and funders to ensure the appropriate financial arrangements are in place".
