Fundraising for young person's mental health unit reaches £250k

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 12:13pm 8th May 2019.

Fundraising for Cornwall's first mental health unit for young people has reached a quarter of a million pounds.

The 14-bed Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAHMS) unit, named Sowenna, opens this summer and will be based at the Bodmin Hospital site.

Bosses say the vital funding will help to provide additional items and specialist areas such as equipment, minibuses, parental accommodation and therapeutic gardens which will make a huge difference to young people's recovery, health and wellbeing.

Sowenna will be run by the Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CFT), who are aiming to raise a total of £1.2 million to make this unit the best in the country.

It will be the first of its kind to provide children and adolescents with access to specialist mental health beds within the Duchy.

"Currently some of our most ill and vulnerable young people are travelling hundreds of miles away from their family and friends to access psychiatric treatment.

"Our aim is to stop families travelling thousands of miles every year to visit their children and to provide world-class facilities in Cornwall to improve recovery times"

Phil Confue, Chief Executive at CFT

The appeal has received generous donations from the Garfield Weston Foundation, National Lottery and Wooden Spoon; as well as ongoing support from The Invictus Trust who provide support and services for teenagers suffering from poor mental health and other related issues.

An ambassador for Sowenna has voiced her pride in the appeal and the important work it is doing.

"The Sowenna team have set out with unwavering determination to succeed in bringing mental health support to the youth people of Cornwall.

"There is every chance that when successful, Sowenna will be a model that will be copied across the UK and I am very proud to be an ambassador."
