A massive house fire breaks out in Illogan

A massive house fire has broken out in the village of Illogan in west Cornwall.

Police and firefighters were scrambled to Bridge Road, as the blaze closed the road in both directions.

The flames had spread to 'a number of properties' but, luckily, there are no reports of any injuries.

Police have confirmed a man has been arrested and they are treating it as suspicious: Read more.

Flames could be seen tearing through the roofs of several properties, with thick smoke billowing out.

Eyewitnesses told Pirate FM at least five fire engines were there and lots of sirens could be heard.

"Police were called to reports of a house fire at 5.30pm on Bridge Road, Illogan.

"The fire has spread to a number of properties.

"The fire service are on the scene dealing with the blaze.

"The road is closed and will remain so for the time being".

"At 17:17 the Critical Control Centre started to receive numerous 999 calls informing of a fire in a property in Illogan.

"An initial attendance of appliances from Tolvaddon and Hayle attended.

"On arrival, firefighters confirmed the property was well alight and requested three additional fire appliance and further support vehicles to tackle the blaze.

"Firefighters are using six breathing apparatus , four hose reel jets, two main jets, 135 ladder and triple extension ladders.

"The fire has started to spread to the roofs of adjacent properties and the incident ground has been sectorised into two".

"Update @ 18.46: Make pumps 8. Additional fire crews from Penzance, Truro, Perranporth and St Just Community Fire Stations were mobilised to the incident.

"Firefighters wearing 8 breathing apparatus and using multiple jets made good progress at the incident. The Welfare Unit was mobilised from St Dennis community Fire Station to provide water and refreshments for crews on scene.

"Update @ 21.39: Incident was scaled back to two pumping appliances where fire crews monitored hotspots

"Update 00.07: The incident was handed over to the police who remained in attendance. Fire investigation will take place the morning 15th May".

Bridge Road was cordoned off until late on Tuesday evening and a scene guard remains on site.
