Man arrested after huge house fire in Illogan

A man has been arrested after a massive house fire in a Cornish village.

Flames tore through the roof on Bridge Road in Illogan and spread to adjacent properties.

Thick smoke could be be seen billowing out from the row of homes on Tuesday evening.

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed they are treating the blaze as suspicious.

"I can confirm that a male is in custody following the fire. At this time, we are treating the fire as suspicious".

Firefighters from Tolvaddon and Hayle were scrambled at around 5.30pm on Tuesday.

They called in back-up after discovering the property well alight and the fire spreading.

"Update @ 18.46: Make pumps 8. Additional fire crews from Penzance, Truro, Perranporth and St Just Community Fire Stations were mobilised to the incident.

"Firefighters wearing 8 breathing apparatus and using multiple jets made good progress at the incident. The Welfare Unit was mobilised from St Dennis community Fire Station to provide water and refreshments for crews on scene.

"Update @ 21.39: Incident was scaled back to two pumping appliances where fire crews monitored hotspots

"Update 00.07: The incident was handed over to the police who remained in attendance. Fire investigation will take place the morning 15th May".

Bridge Road was cordoned off until late on Tuesday evening and a scene guard remains on site.
