Homes "too dangerous" to go inside after Illogan fire

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 1:37pm 15th May 2019. (Updated at 5:09pm 15th May 2019)

This is the scale of the damage after a fire ripped through a row of houses in Illogan.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were all called to the scene on Bridge Road at around 5.30pm on Tuesday.

The blaze broke out in one house and spread to four others - and everybody was evacuated safely.

Officers at the scene have told Pirate FM that there has been 'quite a lot of destruction' and the roofs are damaged.

The homes are currently too dangerous for police to go inside and there is potentially asbestos in the properties too.

There are also now fears that several pets may have died in the fire.

Police say there are unconfirmed reports that a cat, kitten and reptile may have all been inside.

"Unfortunately, the house fire spread across the four houses, leading to quite a lot of destruction.

"The houses at the moment are uninhabitable, it's too dangerous for people to go inside.

"From what you can see the roofs are quite damaged, it's certainly unsafe to go in there, there is potential asbestos inside.

"So, at this moment it is too dangerous even for us to go in there and look at how badly the properties are damaged."

What happened?

Firefighters from Tolvaddon and Hayle found the first well alight just before 5.30pm on Tuesday.

They called in back-up from Penzance, Truro, Perranporth, St Just and St Dennis.

Crews had to use hoses, jets and triple extension ladders as the flames tore through the roofs.

Devon and Cornwall Police say a scene guard is likely to remain in place for most of Wednesday.

The force confirmed a joint investigation is underway with Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service.

They have also revealed that the person arrested on Tuesday evening is a 32-year-old man.

He is being held on suspicion of arson and remains in custody at Camborne Police Station.
