A big fire has broken out at a beach cafe near Falmouth.

It happened at Maenporth just before 10am on Tuesday morning.

Smoke could be seen billowing from the building and across the beach and road.

Firefighters from across Cornwall were called to the scene to tackle the blaze.

It is not yet known how much damage has been caused to the building but the roof appears to have been destroyed.

One person posted on Facebook: "So sorry to hear the news with the cafe guys.

"Really feel for you as you have done such a lovely job of starting out in your new venture.

"Hope it is not as bad as it looks - just remember how the community rallied round Carl and Julie after the storms - lean on us if you need us, we are all here to help you."

Another person added: "Oh no, as long as everyone is OK that's the important bit."

And somebody else wrote: "We have visited the beach and cafe for years, sad news hope everyone is ok."

"At 9.50am Critical Control received multiple emergency calls to a café on fire in the Falmouth area.

"Initially two fire appliances from Falmouth Community Fire Station and two Officers attended the incident where they found the roof of the building fully involved in fire.

"Fire crews attempted to extinguish the fire using four breathing apparatus, a main jet and hosereel."

Update 10.15am: "Make pumps four request was received and further fire crews from Truro and Helston Community Fire Stations were mobilised along with specialist appliances from St Just and St Austell Community Fire Stations."

Update 12.15pm: "Incident has now been scaled down and one appliance from Falmouth Community Fire Station is still in attendance damping down and monitoring the incident.

"A Fire Investigation Team is currently in attendance establishing the cause of the fire."
