96-year-old great grandmother raises £90k for Cornish charity

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 7:00am 2nd June 2019.

Meet the 96-year-old great grandmother who has raised nearly £90,000 for a Cornish charity.

Edna Liddicoat from St Blazey dedicates her free time to raising money for a charity close to her heart, the Merlin MS Centre.

Inspired by her granddaughter, Karen Medlyn a former nurse, who had MS, Edna and her family became instrumental in fundraising activities centred around Edna's love for all things creative and have been raising money for the charity since 2004.

Sadly, Karen passed away in 2014 aged just 44. Edna vowed to continue to fundraise for the only Centre of its kind in Cornwall in honour of her granddaughter.

Dubbed the 'Chick Lady,' Edna and her team of helpers have knitted thousands of festive chicks to raise over £89,000 for the charity which supports people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other neurological conditions.

Edna leads a team who all knit to a pattern she created. Edna then puts the final touches to the chicks including perfectly straight eyes and individual bows.

"We currently have team of 10 knitters and for some, knitting gives them a sense of purpose, they love to know they are supporting a good cause.

"I like to know what's going on, it keeps my mind active, physically I may not be able to do what I used to but I always start the day with the paper and a cup of tea, I do the crosswords each day and love a quiz show.

"I like to feel needed and I am blessed with a family who values my opinion and they know I am not afraid to give it!"

"I will soon be starting plans for our Christmas knits to sell and my family have told me I need to do more YouTube videos, I think a guide to making yeast buns is next on the list."
