Man dies after being pulled from water in Bude

A man has died after being pulled from the water on the north coast of Cornwall.

Pirate FM understands he was surfing at Widemouth Bay in Bude when he got into difficulty in the water.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 4.30pm on Friday afternoon.

The man in his 40s was taken to hospital but sadly he could not be saved.

Both Widemouth and Black Rock beach were closed while lifeguards dealt with the incident.

"RNLI lifeguards at Widemouth Bay, Cornwall, went to the aid of a surfer on Friday (31 May 2019).

"At approximately 4.20pm, a male surfer was seen in trouble in the water around 30 metres north of the lifeguarded beach.

"RNLI Lifeguards from Widemouth Bay and neighbouring Black Rock beach assisted by bringing the casualty to shore and giving CPR.

"The casualty was then taken to hospital by ambulance.

"Both Widemouth Bay and Black Rock beaches were closed while lifeguards dealt with the incident."

Police say his death is not suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

"Police were called at around 4.30pm on Friday 31st May to Widemouth Bay, Bude, following reports of concern for the welfare of a man in the water.

"The man, in his 40s, was treated by ambulance at the scene but sadly confirmed deceased a short time later.

"His next of kin have been informed.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
