Torrential downpours hit Cornwall ahead of thunderstorm warning

Published by Emma Cartonat 9:36am 18th June 2019. (Updated at 9:43am 18th June 2019)

The thunderstorm warning might not cover the Duchy and Devon, but torrential downpours are hitting Cornwall.

The band of bad weather is set to sweep across the south-west on Tuesday.

The Met Office has issued a yellow alert for thunder and lightning but at the moment, that only covers Dorset and Wiltshire: Check the latest warnings.

However, South West Storm Chasers warns our region could still see some rumbles and flashes.

"A fair amount of cloud around with the chance of some showers throughout the day.

"However there should be some sunny intervals too which will feel warm and possibly humid.

"It's this warmth that will fuel these showers and they could become increasingly heavy and thundery during the afternoon, and with light winds, they will be slow moving.

"Although we are not currently covered by the warning at this time, we could still see the odd flash of lightning embedded withing these showers.

"And you know the nature of these showers, some may miss them totally and enjoy a dry day!"

Kernow Weather Team has also issued an advisory for Cornwall, with the heavy rain expected to make driving conditions tricky.

"KWT are issuing a weather advisory for heavy showers, some of these could be wide spread and torrential, across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly for the few few hours.

"Please take extra care if your out driving, and drive to the road conditions your experiencing, don't forget to put your lights on".

"The rain will clear for at time in the afternoon but it will stay rather cloudy".

Tonight: "Rain and showers will develop overnight across much of the region.

"The heaviest showers are likely in Dorset and Wiltshire, and here, thunder, hail and localised flooding are possible".
