Hotel suffers 'significant damage' after fire

A hotel in a picturesque Cornish fishing village says it has suffered 'significant damage' after a fire.

Staff at the The Old Coastguard say they are "hugely upset" after the blaze in the early hours.

Crews from Penzance, St Just, Falmouth and Hayle were scrambled just after midnight.

A dozen guests had to be evacuated but, luckily, the team has confirmed everyone is safe.

"We're hugely upset to have had a fire at The Old Coastguard overnight. Thankfully, our systems appear to have held up well and all guests are safe and sound. We send our apologies to them for having to disturb their night.

"It'll take a day or two to establish what has been relatively significant damage and the work that has to be done to put things back as they should be.

"As a result, we will be closed (bedrooms, bar & restaurant) until further notice, a period that we hope is no more than a few days. We are taking guidance from the fire authorities at the moment.

"If you have existing bookings with us, we will be contacting you as soon as possible today (starting with today's bookings) so that you have all the information you need.

"We're so sorry to upset your plans".
