Theresa May "aware" of critical incident at Treliske

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 8:43am 11th July 2019.

The Prime Minister says she is "aware of the issues" at Treliske after it declared a critical incident.

Extreme pressure at the Royal Cornwall Hospital has led to some operations being cancelled.

The hospital is struggling to cope with demand across all health and care services.

Pirate FM understands that at one point on Monday, 15 ambulances were queued up outside.

People are being urged to avoid A&E where possible and choose alternative services instead.

Emergency teams say they are working hard to keep patients safe and to make sure patients' treatment gets underway while they are waiting to be admitted to wards.

Now Sarah Newton, the MP for Truro and Falmouth, has raised the issue in Parliament during Prime Minister's Questions.

She says it is "extremely worrying" and is asking the government for support for Cornwall's local health service.

"Due to extreme pressure on services across Cornwall leaders of our health and care services have declared a critical incident.

"The pressure has impacted on the Royal Cornwall Hospital in particular

"This is extremely worrying for all families across Cornwall who rely on Treliske.

"Will my Right Honourable friend assure me that she'll do everything she can to enable health ministers to support leaders in Cornwall to resolve this situation as soon as possible?"

Sarah Newton, MP for Truro and Falmouth

"Well can I say to my Honourable Friend that this is obviously a very important issue for her and her constituents and we are aware of the issues at the Royal Cornwall Hospital.

"We know the hospital is taking steps to rectify these.

"Of course, last winter Cornwall Council was supported with over £2m of additional funding to help alleviate the pressures on the local NHS trust.

"But I can assure my Honourable Friend that my Right Honourable Friend the Secretary of State for Health is going to meet MPs to discuss this matter and recognises the importance of this issue for her constituents."
