Graphic images: Beach BBQ warning after woman suffers serious burns

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 7:00am 14th July 2019.

A warning has been issued after a woman suffered serious burns to her foot following a beach barbecue.

Ruth Jenkins shared photos on Facebook showing the injuries she suffered whilst cleaning up after a day at the beach.

In the post, she describes how she picked up a disposable barbecue- which had been left for four hours to chill- and then stood barefoot on the sand which was still hot.

It's been shared over four thousand times.

She suffered partial and full thickness burns to the sole and side of her foot.

Now she's warning others that the sand can stay hot for hours after the barbecue has been put out and goes cold.

Ruth posted the following advice:

*Try to keep them [BBQs] safely above the sand, on purpose built stands or rocks
*Do not assume that a cold BBQ means the sand is safe
*Ensure the sand underneath is completely cooled as soon as possible and definitely before you leave the beach
*Be aware of anyone walking near the affected sand, especially children and dogs
