Police update issued on 'rock fall' tragedy in Cornwall

Police have released more information about the man who died after a cliff collapse on the north Cornwall coast.

Coastguards had reports of a rock fall at Sandymouth Beach in Bude on Tuesday.

Pirate FM understands the casualty became trapped under 1.5 tonnes of rubble but, tragically, could not be saved.

Now officers have confirmed he was a 66-year-old from East Hampshire who was on holiday in the area with his family.

Coastguard rescue teams, firefighters and the air ambulance were scrambled on Tuesday afternoon, along with police and paramedics.

The multi-agency operation to recover the man's body lasted for most of Wednesday.

"The body of a man who died following an incident at Sandymouth Beach in Bude on Tuesday has been recovered.

"The deceased is a 66-year-old man from East Hampshire.

"His next of kin have been informed and a file is to be prepared for the coroner".
