Cyclist airlifted after serious crash in St Austell

A young cyclist has suffered life-threatening injuries after a crash in St Austell.

The man in his 20s was airlifted to Derriford on Thursday evening.

Police say he was caught in a collision with a car on Slades Road.

The incident happened just after 5.30pm, closing the road for six hours.

Devon and Cornwall Police are urging anyone who saw something to come forward, as they try to work out what happened.

"Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious collision in St Austell which left a cyclist with life-threatening injuries.

"Emergency services were called at 5.35pm yesterday (18th July) following the collision between a silver Seat Altea and a cyclist on Slades Road.

"The cyclist, a man in his 20s from St Austell, sustained life-threatening head injuries and was airlifted to Derriford Hospital.

"The female driver of the car, also from St Austell, was uninjured.

"Specialist officers from the Alliance Roads Policing Team attended the scene alongside a forensic collision investigator and scenes of crime officer.

"The road was closed for six hours while a full investigation of the scene took place and police would like to thank the public for their patience.

"Officers are working to establish the cause of the collision and are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them via 101@dc.police.uk or by phone on 101, quoting log number 0744 of 18/07/19".
