Met Office issues heat health alert for Cornwall

Mercury rising: The Met Office has issued a heat health warning for Cornwall.

The level two yellow alert means there is a 70% chance of heatwave conditions.

Top temperatures in the Duchy are set to hit the mid to high 20s over the next few days.

The warm and muggy weather is bringing with it high UV and pollen levels.

However, there is also the risk of thunderstorms from Tuesday evening onwards.

What is a level 2 heat health alert?

The Met Office has issued a level two heat health warning for Cornwall, which means be alert and ready.

It is expected to remain in force until Friday evening, with the probabilty of heatwave conditions at 70%

However the hottest weather will be in the south-east of England, including London, where the alert level is now at amber.

"A very warm week for much of the country with humid days and warm nights. Temperatures will be highest in the east or south-east of England. 

"A band of rain or thunderstorms, expected to push slowly eastwards from Thursday onwards, with fresher conditions developing behind. 

"The progress of the cooler conditions is likely to be slow and erratic, with the extreme south-east of the country likely to hold onto the hot conditions into Friday evening".

What is the south-west forecast?

Today: "Early low cloud and fog will soon clear to give plenty of sunshine. It will become hot inland and in the north. However, there will be the risk of thunderstorms by the late afternoon. Maximum temperature 32 °C.

Tonight: "Thunderstorms will become more widespread, with the risk of hail, gust winds and some heavy rain bursts. Becoming drier later, but low cloud will roll in from the west. Minimum temperature 15 °C.

Wednesday: "After some early low cloud, warm hazy sunshine will develop for most. The wind will be light and it will be a little fresher than Tuesday. Maximum temperature 27 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday: "Thursday will see hot sunshine. There will be thunderstorms overnight, then it will turn much fresher on Friday. Sunny spells and showers will then continue on Friday and Saturday".
