Free life-saving swim sessions for children in Cornwall

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 4:38pm 24th July 2019.

Children in Cornwall are being offered live-saving swim sessions around the Cornish coast - for free.

Swim Safe teaches kids the dangers of open water and what to do if they get into trouble.

Lessons are taking place across the summer in St Ives, Bude, Falmouth, Looe, Marazion and Newquay.

Children aged 7-14 who can swim at least 25 metres can take part.

What do the sessions involve?

The hour-long Swim Safe sessions are run by qualified swimming teachers and qualified lifeguards, supported by a team of trained volunteers.

The first 20 minutes covers land-based safety and then it is into the water for practical tuition with a swimming teacher.

Wetsuits and swim hats will be provided for the session and all young people will get a free goody bag and T-shirt.

"Children love swimming outdoors, but swimming in the sea, rivers or lakes is very different to swimming in a pool, where most children learn.

"Swim Safe is a free, fun activity that teaches kids lifelong skills that will help them enjoy open water safely."

Swim England and the RNLI launched Swim Safe in 2013 at a single venue in Cornwall.

Now in its sixth year, Swim Safe has grown to include 29 locations across the UK hosting sessions for the public and local schools.

The sessions are delivered by local partners, including community groups, leisure providers and local councils.

Swim Safe's goal is for all children in the UK and Ireland to grow up with the skills to stay safe in and around the open water.
