Thunderstorms warning issued for Cornwall

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 5:04pm 11th August 2019.

The Met Office has issued an urgent warning for possible thunderstorms for Cornwall.

The yellow alert covers the whole of the Duchy and it will be in force until 8pm on Sunday evening.

Forecasters say heavy rain is on the cards too, sparking the risk of flash flooding and travel disruption.

What can we expect?

  • Some flooding of a few homes and businesses likely, leading to some damage to buildings or structures.
  • Possibly some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes.
  • There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.
  • Delays to train services are possible.
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible.

What is the forecast?

"Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected on Sunday afternoon and early evening.

"Some places will miss these, but where they do occur, 20mm rainfall is possible in less than an hour and 30-40mm in two to three hours in one or two spots.

"Lightning and hail may be additional hazards.

"The showers will slowly die out through the evening".
