Cornwall remembers solar eclipse of 1999

You might not believe it - but it has been 20 years since the total solar eclipse.

Cornwall and the UK watched as the skies over the Duchy went completely dark.

Locals have shared their videos to mark the anniversary yesterday (Sunday).

Here comes the science part - a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, blocking the view of the Sun from Earth.

This one happened on the 11th of August and from the video you can see crowds waiting for the special moment in Truro.

Phill Wills was among those watching as the cathedral was plunged into darkness on 11th August 1999.

He was not alone in capturing the moment on camera though.

In 2017 Dave Redmond managed to restore this footage, filmed in St Ives, from a damaged video tape.

From the video, you can make out his friend letting off a rocket.

Others can be seen hiding under umbrellas and heard whistling and cheering as the moon blocks the sun.

Cameras begin to flash as the crowd disappears into the darkness for two minutes.
