Lifeboat braves 20ft waves to help stricken boat

This the stomach-churning moment lifeboat volunteers braved 20ft waves to help a stricken boat off Cornwall.

The fishing vessel was taking on water as strong winds battered the Duchy on Saturday morning.

The St Ives' lifeboat was scrambled in conditions so rough, the crew could not reach the boat with a pump.

The Coastguard helicopter was also drafted in and managed to winch someone down with the right equipment.

You can watch the dramatic rescue below but you might want to give it a miss if you get seasick!

The vessel was safely escorted back to Newlyn with the help of the neighbouring Penlee lifeboat.

"The crew did a sterling job in what were challenging conditions over a prolonged period of time.

"They worked together extremely efficiently ensuring that every task was managed quickly and effectively".

Deputy Second Coxswain, Robin Langford
