Met Office verdict on bank holiday heatwave

Met Office verdict on bank holiday heatwave

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 8:01am 23rd August 2019. (Updated at 1:23pm 23rd August 2019)

The sun is shining, the weather is sweet - Cornwall is set to sizzle over the bank holiday.

The Met Office is predicting highs of 26C on Saturday and in the low 20s on Sunday and Monday.

Heat health alerts are in force for some parts of the UK, with temperatures in the south-east set to hit the mid-30s.

Pirate FM has asked forecasters about the chances of a heatwave in the Duchy.

The response was that it is not totally off the cards, but do not hold your breath!

What are Cornwall's chances of a heatwave?

"Heatwave conditions for Cornwall - I think we need at least three days or more of 25C or above so, at the moment, that does look a little bit unlikely.

"I think temperatures are generally going to be in the low-20s for most places but still, with 26C on Saturday, it's going to feel very warm out there.

"Bank holiday weekends, in the past, for the late August haven't been particularly warm so actually this bank holiday weekend itself could be the hottest bank holiday weekend for August ever.

"It will depend exactly where we get the hottest temperatures but it could potentially be a record-breaking bank holiday".

Met Office Meteorologist, Becky Mitchell

What is the full forecast for the bank holiday weekend?

Today: "Rather cloudy to begin the day, but the sunshine will break through and it will be staying dry throughout. Feeling warm in the sunshine during the afternoon. Maximum temperature 26°C".

Tonight: "A fine and dry end to the day with mainly clear skies. Chilly through the early hours, with some mist or fog possible in places around dawn. Minimum temperature 9°C".

Saturday: "Clear blue skies and sunshine through most of the day. The odd patch of cloud is possible and it will be feeling very warm. Maximum temperature 30°C".

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday: "Mainly dry with warm sunny spells. However there will be some cloud around at times, and the odd shower is possible in places".
