The traffic blog to beat the queues in Cornwall

Police have launched a real-time traffic blog to help Cornwall and Devon beat the bank holiday queues.

The RAC estimates more than 1.6 million leisure trips will be made across the UK this weekend, as the weather hots up.

The A30 and M5 are expected to be among the busiest routes in the south-west, as visitors flock to the Duchy.

Stop-start traffic is already being reported on the A38 between Saltash and Trerulefoot and at Chudleigh in Devon.

Now Devon and Cornwall Police are reminding drivers to check its Traffic Watch site, which updates every eight minutes.

It includes all the traffic incident and roadworks across the region - keep up-to-date with that at the link below.

Highways England is promising that almost 97% of motorways and major A-roads will be free from roadworks.

The organisation says 75 miles of roadworks are being lifted and 411 miles of roadworks completed in time for the weekend.

"We're doing everything we can to make journeys as smooth as possible and that's why we're keeping 97% of the road network we manage, free from roadworks.

"Safety is our top priority and we know from experience that almost half of breakdowns can easily be avoided if motorists carry out simple vehicle checks before setting off over this period.

"Highways England traffic officers will also be on patrol and working with partners to help clear any incidents; the majority of which will be dealt with in under an hour.

"And motorists are being reminded to do their bit to help keep traffic flowing by making sure they have everything they need for their journey by making sure they are aware of the signs and signals on motorways".
