Truro merry-go-round to reopen this weekend

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 2:30pm 23rd August 2019.

A much-loved merry-go-round that was destroyed by fire in Truro is reopening.

It is almost a year since the iconic carousel on Lemon Quay was burnt to the ground.

A full investigation was carried out into what caused the blaze and police are treating it as suspected arson.

The ride was completely destroyed on the piazza and a crowdfunder was launched, describing the fire as "heart wrenching".

Some parts were salvaged and the owners have spent the best part of a year re-building the attraction, so it is exactly how it was before.

Now it is set to re-open to the public on Saturday 24th August - just in time for the long, sunny bank holiday weekend.

Owner Phil Raymond has told Pirate FM the fun all kicks off at 10am with the town crier and entertainment for all the family.

"We have re-built the ride that were there and put it back exactly as it was.

"It has been a lot of work and testiment to tradespeople over Cornwall as parts had to be especially made.

"It is looking absolutely beautiful."

In a statement at the time, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze developed "very quickly".

"At 2.41am our Critical Control Centre received a number of 999 calls reporting a large fire in the centre of the city.

"The initial call stated that a merry-go-round was smoking badly.

"Two appliances from Truro Fire Station were mobilised with a wholetime fire officer.

"Our CCTV operator monitored the fire develop very quickly and a further appliance was mobilised from Tolvaddon Fire Station due to the size and nature of materials on fire.

"Devon and Cornwall Police also attended this incident as arson is suspected.

"A fire investigation will take place later in the morning".
