999 call about bacon sandwich sparks warning

999 call about bacon sandwich sparks warning

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 7:00am 31st August 2019.

People in Cornwall and Devon are being urged to only dial 999 in a real emergency - after a call about a bacon sandwich.

A prankster called our force trying to order a bacon sandwich, fried eggs and a drink.

When asked for their name and address they would only respond with 'Barnstaple' though.

Officers say that inappropriate calls to the emergency number increase during the summer season.

Listen to the call below...

"Every day, we receive inappropriate calls to our emergency 999 number. This increases during our busy summer months.

"Here is just one. Unfortunately, our contact centre couldn’t help this man with his #999BaconSandwich

"Remember, only call 999 if it is a police emergency.

Devon and Cornwall Police

It comes after both 999 and 101 went down across the Duchy and Devon because of technical issues.

Calls were being put through to another force on Thursday afternoon.

The details were then passed onto Devon and Cornwall who would deploy resources locally.

Extra officers were also put on patrol to reassure the public.

The problems lasted for around an hour and the public were thanked for their patience while the issues were fixed.
