Building fire breaks out in Helston town centre

Firefighters from across west Cornwall have been scrambled to a building fire in the middle of Helston.

Crews from the town, Mullion and Falmouth rushed to reports of a burning smell on Meneage Street.

The cause of the smoke inside a retail unit is believed to have been accidental.

The road was coronded off for safety reasons from around 1.30pm on Wednesday, but has since reopened.

"The Critical Control Centre received an emergency call at 13:25 to a smell of burning at a retail unit in Meneage Street, Helston.

"Crews from Helston, Mullion and Falmouth Community Fire Stations were mobilised, along with two officers.

"Crews used breathing apparatus and a hosereel jet. A thermal imaging camera was also used.

"Police attended and closed the road. The road has now reopened.

"The cause of the smoke is believed to be an electrical fault. All crews have now left the scene".

"Meneage Street in both directions re-opened. Traffic easing after earlier building fire from A394 to Market Place.

"The road has been closed for safety reasons while the fire service are on scene".
