A Cornishman who gave his life to save thousands during 9/11 is awarded a Presidential medal of honour.

Rick Rescorla from Hayle was vice president for Morgan Stanley when the planes hit the World Trade Center.

The 62-year-old died when the south tower collapsed, but only after making sure other workers were safely evacuated.

At one point, the ex-Army veteran was singing Cornish songs to keep spirits up.

Now, 18 years after the devastating terror attacks, Rick is being awarded the President's Citizens Medal.

The group, Kernow Matters To You, has long called for Rick to be recognised by the government in the UK.

"We are pleased and proud to inform you that Rick Rescorla, son of Hayle and proud Cornishman, is to be awarded the President's Citizens Medal.

"This being announced on Wednesday September 11th, 2019, the 18th anniversary of the Twin Towers, NY, NY, USA attacks.

"Cyril Richard 'Rick' Rescorla, BA MA LLB holder of 'The White Cross of Cornwall', US Silver Star, US Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, US Purple Heart, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, British General Service Medal and nicknamed 'Hard Core' and 'The Cornish Hawk' - saved 2,687 lives on September 11, 2001 whilst singing Cornish songs.

"He was an academic, Cornish patriot, and hero supreme, and was the man who predicted 9/11 and remembered with pride by many of us in Kernow, some of whom knew the great man personally.

"A large granite memorial stands to his eternal memory in Hayle and a train has been named for him by the Great Western Railway".

They added: "Our thoughts are with Rick's wife Susan, their children and other family members both Stateside and in Kernow".
