More of open mineshaft in St Ives collapses

More of a mineshaft, that opened up in a car park on a housing estate in St Ives, has collapsed.

It is over a year since the gaping hole in the Garth-an-Creet area was cordoned off.

Locals reported hearing more rumbles and thuds coming from the pit over the weekend.

They have branded it a danger to children and pets and say it should have been dealt with sooner.

However, there still seems to be a bit of a row over who is responsible for filling the hole.

Andy Richards lives round the corner and tells Pirate FM something needs to happen soon.

"It has opened up. There've been more rumbles and more of the actual shaft falling away into the pit beneath it over the weekend.

"It's just getting bigger and bigger and still not being tended to.

"I know the local residents would like to see something done with it but we're not seeing any sort of action.

"Over a year of this sort of hole being in the actual car park is just too long really.

"The fact of the matter is it's actually a danger and nobody's actually dealt with it.

"Local residents feel that if this was in a high-tourism area in St Ives, I'm sure it would have been dealt with quite some considerable time ago.

"But we're over a year now and nobody's tended to it".

"The mine workings are in a private car park and we have fenced off the area and informed the management company.

"As it is on private land we are investigating who has responsibility to fit a barrier at the site and we are working to ensure this work will be undertaken by the correct parties."

Cornwall Council

Councillor Andrew Mitchell lives in the area and posted the following update on social media on Monday.

"I have investigated this with the council (even more so as it is just around the corner from me!)

"I have categorically been told it is the land owner's responsibilty to get this fixed and Cornwall Council is in the process of identifying which of the maisonettes has that parking space!

"I am happy to work with all the local residents and owner to move this forward".

Councillor Andrew Mitchell
