Cornwall puts forward bid to host UK Pride 2021

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 12:41pm 17th September 2019.

Cornwall is putting forward a bid to host UK Pride in 2021.

Organisers say it would be a three-day celebration of diversity and equality across the LGBTQ+ community.

The event has previously been held in Hull, the Isles of Wight and Northern Ireland.

In 2020 it will be held in Newcastle.

Now Cornwall, Lancaster, Oxford and Weston-Super-Mare are going head to head to host the event in two years' time.

Matthew Kenworthy-Gomes is the chairperson of Cornwall Pride. He told Pirate FM it would be 'phenomenal'.

"In 2021 Cornwall celebrates its 50th anniversary of our own national identity, where Cornwall was recognised for its special relationship between us and the crown, hence the name the Duchy.

"Also the UK government has recognised cornwall as a minority, so the Cornish will have a national and international recognition as of 2021, so to have Cornwall Pride celebrate with those two incredible things happening will just be very, very special for us.

"We have to break down social barriers and we have to understand that if someone is different that doesn't matter, it's cool that they're different. And if someone chooses to identify as someone else that's their choice, it's not for someone else to make a comment about."

The UK has more than 150 Pride events ranging from small community events for a few hundred people, to large festival-style Prides and major public events attracting hundreds of thousands. And that’s something to be proud of.  All the Members of the UK Pride Organisers Network are able to vote on which Pride is awarded ‘UKPride‘ status each year. We’re thrilled that 2019 has been the biggest year yet with more Pride events, more visibility for all sexuality and/or gender types and a dramatic stand against hate crime and the continual challenges that the LGBTQ+ community face.

Hosting UKPride shines a beacon on a Pride and makes it a focal point for the Pride movement in the UK in that year, enhancing their position regionally, nationally and in the global Pride movement. It’s a similar model to EuroPride and WorldPride, and Canada has also followed suit.
