53 Cornwall patients wait for 'life-saving' transplants

Published by Emma Carton at 7:00am 18th September 2019. (Updated at 7:03am 18th September 2019)

More than 50 patients in Cornwall are waiting for a transplant that could save their lives.

The total number on the list right now is 53 and the figures are sparking calls for more organ donors to come forward.

It comes as research shows only 40% of people in the south-west have told families they would want to do that.

Brian Tierney speaks for the South West Organ Donation Services Team is urging us to have those conversations.

"The reality is you're more inclined to need a transplant than to actually be a donor.

"And last year in Cornwall, 46 people received an organ transplant.

"That's 46 lives just within our county alone saved through organ donation.

"Just start a conversation around the table tonight. Put it out there what your feeling are about it and see what comes back.

"You're more inclined to need one than to be a donor and if you're willing to accept one, should you be willing to give one?"

What is the law around organ donation?

From spring 2020, organ donation in England will move to an 'opt out' system.

You may also hear it referred to as 'Max and Keira's Law': Read More.

It means all adults in England will be considered to have agreed to be an organ donor when they die.

That is unless they have recorded a decision not to donate or they are in one of the excluded groups, like under-18s.

You still have a choice if you want to be an organ donor or not when you die.
