Decades-old crisp packet found on Cornish beach

A crisp packet dating back to the 1980s has been found washed up on a Cornish beach.

Environmentalist and co-founder of Beach Guardian, Emily Stevenson, made the discovery at Porthcothan.

She shared the photos on social media, showing the use-by date of 1984 - 12,821 days ago to be exact!

Emily is hoping recyling schemes like the Walkers TerraCycle scheme will help to ease litter on our shores.

You can read more about that and find your nearest collection point here.

"This packet of SQUARE CRISPS use-by date went by 12,821 days ago.

"It was the same date that Margaret Thatcher was the UK Prime Minister, Ronald Reagan was the US president and the UK Number 1 was George Michael - Careless Whisper.

"It's also from the same year, 1984, which the new season of American Horror Story is based on!

"I think this shows a much more horrifying story!

"...and I wasn’t even born until 13 years after that!

"Feeling grateful for the Walkers TerraCycle recycling scheme that we now have in place.

"Hopefully we won’t be finding the litter dropped today in another 35 years time!".

Beach Guardian, Emily Stevenson
