Drivers urged to check tyres after car flips over

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 1:22pm 26th September 2019.

Devon and Cornwall Police put out a warning to drivers about tyres - after a car flipped over.

People are being urged to check vehicle's tyre tread to help keep themselves and other road users safe.

It comes after a driver suffered a minor head injury when they overturned their car near Tiverton on Thursday morning.

"Check your tyres!!! Called to this one this morning. Time and money wasted, as well as disruption caused to members of the public!

"Thankfully driver was okay (this time)."

How to check tyre tread depth - the 20p test:

  • The 20p test is a simple, quick and easy way of checking the tyre tread of your car's wheels.
  • Just take a 20p coin and insert it into the tread grooves on the tyre.
  • If you can't see the outer band on the coin, your tyres are above the legal limit.
  • However, if you can see the band and that section of the coin is still visible, your tyres could be unsafe and require professional inspection by a mechanic.
  • The RAC suggests drivers conduct the 20p test around every two weeks and before long journeys.
