A Cornish hedgehog sanctuary reports a rise in the number of distressing rescues.

Prickles and Paws, based at Cubert, says it has recorded a lot of sad cases in the last week.

The charity is urging anyone who spots a creature during the day to call straight away.

The team are advising people not to weight the animals, to see if they are ready for hibernation.

We are also being asked not to try to care for them or release them ourselves.

"In the last week we have had a lot of very distressing and sad cases admitted.

"It is VITAL that if a hedgehog is found out during the day, particularly at this time of year, that a RESCUE is contacted IMMEDIATELY!

"DO NOT try to care for the hedgehogs yourself or RE-RELEASE.

"We understand that people have the best intentions but hedgehogs are very complex little creatures and the stress of being handled can exacerbate problems leading to a very rapid decline.

"The quicker they get to a rescue the higher their chance of survival.

"Please do NOT weigh hedgehogs to check if they are ready for hibernation, there is still PLENTY of time for them to put on weight particularly in Cornwall where it is so mild.

"Weighing them is stressful and not necessary at the moment".
