Giant waves leave sand dunes 'very unstable' in Newquay

Sand dunes in Newquay have been left 'very unstable' after Cornwall's coast was battered by high tides and big surf.

Over the weekend the downpours also led to places such as Mevagissey harbour being flooded.

The steps at Crantock beach were destroyed and washed away in the high spring tides.

Now lifeguards in the area are urging beach-goers to stay away from Crantock's sand dunes which are in a very unstable condition.

People and dogs are being advised to avoid them, and someone was spotted scaling the sand on Sunday.

"If you are visiting Crantock today, please stay well clear of the dunes. This week's spring tides and large surf have left the dunes in a very unstable condition.

"Dog walkers especially, try and keep your dogs away from these dunes. Stay safe"

The whole of the Duchy's coastline is still on flood watch with a string of warnings in force for Monday evening.
