Three people have been winched to safety after getting cut off by the tide near Newquay.

Two adults and a child got into difficulty at Whipsiderry, Porth, on Sunday afternoon.

Lifeguards, two lifeboats, coastguard teams from Padstow and Newquay and the rescue chopper were all called to the scene at around 4.40pm.

The casualties were located and all three were winched up into the helicopter and were checked over by a paramedic.

Bosses say the rescue mission was an "amazing response" from all involved and was highly time-critical.

Whipsiderry rescue

"Padstow team members in the mobile vehicle, and travelling from their homes, and from a training course, all arrived at the RV area of the Sands Resort Hotel & Spa, and immediately began to secure the area around where the helicopter would be operating.

"Newquay CRT had placed an Edge Safety Officer observing the winching, and the team had rope rescue equipment ready for a back up extraction.

"All three casualties were winched up into the helicopter, and during this procedure, members of both teams further secured the area, and set a helicopter landing site.

"Newquay Lifeboats were then stood down with thanks.

Whipsiderry rescue

"The casualties, two adults and a child, were safely offloaded into the care of the coastguard team members, with the winchman paramedic attending making sure that the casualties were clear of injury or illness.

"Rescue 924 then returned to base, and the teams stowed equipment, before departing scene

"Amazing response from all assets and agencies on an highly time critical rescue."
