Queues and closures after 'serious' crash on M5

Published by Emma Carton at 7:30am 2nd October 2019. (Updated at 12:33pm 2nd October 2019)

A crash that closed the M5 in both directions is being described as serious.

Two cars were caught in the collision between Bridgwater and Burnham-on-Sea, just before 5.30am on Wednesday.

Firefighters have confirmed one vehicle overturned and ended up on the opposite side of the road.

One casualty was trapped and two are now being treated by paramedics.

"Two Fire Engines from Bridgwater, two from Burnham-on-Sea and a heavy rescue tender from Taunton were all sent to a report of an RTC that had gone across both carriageways.

"On arrival crews confirmed that this RTC was involving two vehicles and had initially crashed on the southbound carriageway.

"One vehicle in the southbound carriageway had no persons trapped, however the vehicle that had overturned onto the northbound carriageway had one person removed by ambulance personnel and one person still trapped inside.

"Crews assisted the ambulance crew in getting the second casualty onto a spinal board, before making the vehicles safe.

"The incident was left in the hands of the police".

Inrix Traffic and Travel was reporting four-mile tailbacks but says traffic is now coping well.

Lanes are closed on both the north and southbound carriageways, between junctions 22 and 23.

"One lane closed due to emergency repairs on M5 in both directions between J23 (A39 Bridgwater North) and J22 (Burnham-on-Sea). Traffic is coping well.

"The road opened around 06:45 with lane three (of three) remaining closed southbound and lane four (of four) remaining closed northbound for central reservation barrier repairs".
