Eight people 'seriously injured' after bus crash

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 5:47pm 5th October 2019. (Updated at 8:25am 6th October 2019)

Up to eight people are thought to be seriously injured after a 'major incident' in Devon.

A double-decker bus overturned on the A385 on Totnes Road on Saturday morning.

The collision took place between Totnes and Paignton, near to Lombcrombe Cross at around 11am.

37 people sustained injuries in total and casualties were taken to hospitals across the region.

Police, paramedics, firefighters and an air ambulance all got the call.

Emergency services remain on the scene as investigation work is being carried out.

There are a number of road closures in place and people are urged to avoid the area.

Work is now underway to get the vehicle upright again.

“Following the incident near Lombcrombe Cross at around 11am today (5 October), 37 people sustained injuries, of which eight people are described as having potentially seriously injuries.

“Those injured have been conveyed to Bristol, Exeter, Torbay, Derriford, and Newton Abbott for treatment and ongoing assessment by medical professionals; All who were sent to Newton Abbott Hospital have since been discharged.

“In addition, 10 further people were assessed and supported at Paignton library by police and medical professionals, but did not require any further medical treatment.

“The scene is now in the hands of the police, and officers from the serious collisions investigation unit continue with their enquiries.

"We can confirm that the driver of the bus has not been arrested, but he is helping police with our investigations into this incident.

“On top of this, the vehicle will need to be righted and recovered which will be challenging, therefore a cordon plus closures around the scene will remain in place possibly until tomorrow morning.

“Today has seen emergency services and health partners come together to response to this serious collision. This major multi-agency effort to support those involved and has understandably added to existing pressure on the health services.

“Therefore we are not only appealing to the public to both avoid the area, but also ask that people also avoid attending accident and emergency units unless it is an actual emergency, to help alleviate some of the pressure.”
