Patients urged to help ease pressure on south west hospitals

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 8:57am 6th October 2019.

Cornwall's biggest hospital is urging patients to choose the right services after a 'major incident' in Devon.

37 people were injured when a double-decker bus overturned and people were rushed to hospitals across the region.

None were taken to Trelikse but the hospital is warning that there is pressure across south west hospitals because of it.

Patients are being asked to use minor injury units and pharmacies where possible.

There has also been an outbreak in Cornwall of what is believed to be norovirus, and people with symptoms are urged to avoid hospitals.

"It is a busy weekend for hospitals in the region and we're asking the public for support in using alternative services wherever possible.

"Many of our minor injury units across Cornwall are open until 10 pm and live waiting times, locations and opening times can be found on our website: www.royalcornwall.nhs.ukor people can call 111 for advice on the nearest and most appropriate service, including late night pharmacies. Out of hours GP services can also be reached by calling 111.

"There will be pharmacies open on Sunday who can give advice on a wide range of minor illnesses and advise on over the counter medicines.

"We're also aware there is norovirus-like illness starting to circulate locally so we'd ask anyone who has symptoms of diarrhoea and sickness or who has been in contact with anyone with those symptoms not to come into hospital to visit relatives or friends.

"You can find advice on managing norovirus on www.nhs.ukor call 111."
