Cash boost for teenage mental health service in Cornwall

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 5:58am 10th October 2019.

A mental health service for young people in Cornwall is going to be expanded, thanks to a government cash injection.

Hear Our Voice is a project run by charity Young People Cornwall and commissioned by NHS Kernow Clinical Commissioning Group.

The service, which is based in St Austell but serves the whole of Cornwall,  provides access to support for young people experiencing all kinds of mental health issues.

Some of the services include 1:1 sessions with practitioners, therapy and projects across Cornwall involving music and sport.

It has received £65,243 of national funding.

The money will fund two extra well-being practitioners and will result in the expansion of the project.

It will now be able to serve children from eight to 17 years old, rather than from the age of 11.

"What we found was the more we were working with children, say 11, 12, 13 years old, when we're asking them "do they remember when they felt OK?" A lot of them were saying [during] primary school things were OK and as they moved up to secondary school things got difficult.

"What we're offering is early intervention so when they start to notice they are struggling, we can get in there quickly to try and prepare them and help them out.

NHS Kernow and Cornwall Council supported Young People Cornwall’s bid for the government cash.

The money will be used to expand the project for the first year, with a commitment from NHS Kernow to take on the responsibility of funding the service by the end of year three.
