Two people are taken to hospital after being caught in a rip on the Cornish coast.

The adult and child, believed to be a man and a boy, were being swept out to sea at Perranporth.

The Coastguard helicopter and a lifeboat were scrambled on Monday, but the pair managed to make it to the beach.

St Agnes Coastguard Rescue Team has confimed they were taken to Treliske to be checked over.

"At 13:55 the team were called to Perranporth to assist and adult and a child struggling in a rip.

"As the first Coastguard members reached the beach, they had managed to get themselves ashore and the Coastguard helicopter (Rescue 924) landed.

"After being checked by the helicopter medic, they were transferred to the awaiting ambulance for further medical checks.

"The team returned to the station at 15:17pm".

How do I spot a rip current?

  • Darker patches in the water beside shallower sandbars
  • Rippled or churned water without breaking waves (as shown in the centre of the photo above)
  • Formation of foam
  • Bits of debris floating out to sea
  • Brown discoloured water where the sand beneath has been disturbed.
