Woman detained after incident on A39 bridge

A woman has been detained under the Mental Health Act after an incident that closed Cornwall's A39.

Emergency services were scrambled to the River Camel bridge at Wadebridge on Monday afternoon.

They were concerned for the welfare of a woman, who was reported to be on the wrong side of the railings.

Police and trained negotiators were talking to the lady in her 30s for eight hours.

She was taken to a place of safety in the early hours of Tuesday morning, before the road was reopened.

"Police were called at 4.50pm yesterday [14 October] following concern for the welfare of a woman on River Camel Bridge, Wadebridge.

"The woman who was reportedly on the wrong side of the bridge railings.

"Police attended along with HM Coastguard, fire and ambulance.

"The A39/bridge was closed.

"Officers and trained negotiators spoke with the woman for several hours.

"The woman, in her 30s, came back onto the right side of the railings around 00.55am today [15th October ] and she was brought safely from the bridge by officers.

"She was checked over by paramedics before being detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to a place of safety.

"The road reopened at 1.30am and police would like to thank the public for their patience during this incident".
