Damage to restaurant hit by fire is "considerable"

A Cornish seafood restaurant estimates it will not reopen until the end of next month, after a fire.

Staff at Amélies in Porthleven have described the damage to the first floor as considerable.

The cause of the blaze, that broke out last Saturday, still has not been determined.

However the team say they have been overwhelmed by the messages and offers of support.

Posting on Facebook, Amélies has praised the quick response by its staff and Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service.

Despite describing it as a devastating time, they have confirmed they will be holding a reopening party!

"It has been a devastating couple of days for Amélies, but everyone is safe and well.

"The cause of Saturday's fire is still being determined, and we would personally like to thank all the staff for acting quickly and professionally.

"We didn't have any customers in the restaurant at the time, and the four members of staff who were present called the fire brigade as soon as smoke was spotted, and the smoke alarm sounded.

"The firefighters were on the scene very quickly, but there is sadly considerable damage to the first-floor toilets and kitchen, and considerable smoke damage elsewhere.

"We have been overwhelmed by the messages of support received from the local community.

"We had a local taxi firm offering to help take our staff home, an electrician offering his services, so many locals just offering to help with the clean, and many of the other businesses in town offering to help where they can. We can't thankyou enough.

"Rest assured, Amélies will be back. Once the dust has settled, we will be able to determine exactly how much work is required to repair the damage, and how long this is likely to take.

"We're currently estimating we'll be back up and running by the end of November, but will keep customers updated as soon as we know more.

"All our staff will remain Amélie's employees throughout the refurbishment. We are incredibly lucky to have such a brilliant team.

"Thank you again to everyone who's been in touch. We look forward to seeing you all at our reopening party".
