Orionid meteor shower visible from Cornwall tonight

It's all eyes on the skies... as people in Cornwall could catch a glimpse of the orionid meteor shower.

It is one of the best known meteor showers and can be seen all over the globe.

Shooting stars will sweep across the Duchy's night sky on Monday.

The shower is visible from the 2nd October to 7th November 2019 but peaks on the 21st October

Lucky viewers could see 20 shooting stars an hour appear randomly across the sky.

"The orionid shower will peak between the 21st and 22nd of Oct between midnight and dawn.

"In the annual calendar it is one of the best known meteor shower and can be seen all over the globe. It can be an extra special event as pieces of it are from Halley's comet.

"It passes by the planet once every 75 - 76 years but the annual shower makes up for those that miss that event.

"As the comet follows the path around the sun it leaves a tiny path of debris. This debris enters at a speed of around 41 miles per second into the earths atmosphere, it vapourises upon friction with the air and that is what causes the streak of light across the sky.

"As always it is a waiting game so if possible find an open space, take a chair and wrap up warm. You can see them with your naked eye so need for a telescope etc. Make sure whatever location you take it's safe. Away from light pollution is always the best view but the back garden is just as good.

"The weather isn't looking to bad for this event, I will be up to have a look so good luck if you are too."
